Preserving Farm Animal
Genetic Diversity
in Today's
High-Tech World

Who are we?

The Foundation was started by a small group of concerned scientists who believed that many of our traditional breeds were at risk. Membership now consists of farmers, scientists, breed associations and commodity organizations who share these concerns.

Mission

To support the conservation of farm animal genetic resources in Canada and around the world, and to provide for a sustainable animal industry now and in the future.

Objectives

The Foundation:

Testimonials....

Portion of a statement from the "House of Commons Debates",

November 29, 2002:

«Mr. Speaker, diversity of species is a critical foundation of the success of life on the planet. In the same way, genetic diversity of livestock, cattle, hogs, poultry and so on in Canada, is the foundation of our food supply. While Canada is doing a good job of nurturing the genetic diversity of food plants, we are doing little to preserve and promote livestock diversity. I urge that livestock genetics be given special attention in the budget. Let us listen to the Canadian Foundation for the Conservation of Farm Animal Genetic Resources and act soon on this before it is too late.»

 Mr. Peter Adams M.P (Peterborough)

«A significant majority of farm revenues in Canada come from the animal sector. At Laval University, we strongly support the concept of a research centre to protect bio-diversity and ensure that we have genetic options in the face of potential changes in the production environment.»

Jean-Claude Dufour, Dean
Faculté des sciences de l'agriculture
et de l'alimentation,
Université Laval

«Preserving genetic resources is essential for the future of the Canadian swine breeding industry, because diversity and variablility are the key ingredients upon which genetic improvement is based. The creation of a Canadian centre dedicated to the preservation of genetic resources for all farm animals is the best way to ensure conservation efforts are well targeted and coordinated, and are based upon sound scientific principles and the best technologies available.»

Jacques P. Chesnais
General Manager
Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement Inc.

«The conservation of Canada’s farm animal genetic resources is essential for the future of Canada's food security and exports. Thus McGill University strongly supports the establishment of a national farm animal genetic resources centre. Such a centre will aid Canada both in meeting the challenges it faces today and in the future as well as allow Canada to play its role in the worldwide effort for the conservation of farm animal genetic resources.»

Dr. Deborah Buszard, Dean
Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
McGill University

«The Dairy Farmers of Canada recognize the benefits for society to protect genetic diversity in the dairy industry. Canadian consumers receive benefits from dairy production efficiencies, however these efficiencies are significantly the result of breeding animals of the highest caliber, thus limiting genetic variation. The Dairy Farmers of Canada thus strongly support the conservation of animal genetics by the federal government for future applications, as they have so capably done for plants.»
